The Rhydspence Inn, Whitney-on-Wye

Originally built in the 14th century as a manor house and later converted into a drovers inn.  Situated on the welsh border of the Wye Valley with spectacular views of the Welsh hills and Herefordshire countryside.
Kilvert mentioned the inn in his diary of 1872 ‘four inches of mud in the Rhydspence inn on the Welsh side of the border’

The inn was probably built to accommodate travellers including pilgrims on their route from Abbey Cwmhir to Hereford Cathedral.  Extensions were added during the 17^th and 20^th centuries.  The inn progressed to being more of a hotel and restaurant from the 1950s onwards.  Now it has two bars and an a la carte restaurant. 

The former landlady and wife of Philip Clark, Sarah Ann Clark, reputedly haunt the premises and appears when young children are staying at the inn.
