Cross Keys, Usk
The white washed Cross Keys is the oldest pub in Usk dating back to the 1600s and stands on the site of an earlier building. Thatched in earlier times with the interior consist of two main rooms with a bar in between which has a fireplace. Stone steps lead down to a cellar from the dining room. An inglenook is located in the lounge and has a carved oak mantelpiece.
One of the most haunted pubs in Wales which became national news in 1958 when the then landlord, Mr Hoffman, called in spiritualists to solve an age old mystery of a first floor bedroom door. According to Mr Hoffman ‘No matter how firmly the latch is fastened it still manages to raise itself’. It was found that the inn was haunted by a 17th century lady from foreign fields whose name was Clare or Clara Bernhardt.
